SOC 263 – Immigration & Urban Life NYC (3)
This is an online and travel study course that will acquaint the student with the scope and nature of social immigration and urbanization of New York City from the early settlers to the present day. The student is required to complete a series of on-line assignments, readings and discussions prior to the NYC visit in immigration, urbanization, and cities. Walking tours, presentations, lectures, and discussions will complement with visits to prominent historical sites surrounding social immigration, growth of urban areas due to global change, and urban migration such as the Tenement Museum and Ellis Island; the culturalization and social issues surrounding various boroughs of Manhattan such as Brooklyn, Chinatown, Little Italy, and Harlem; and the social impact of the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Requirements include readings on relevant topics, tours, and presentations and a final research paper. Course consists of five weeks on-line instruction then five days travel in NYC.
